Traveling with Food Allergies: A Pre-Trip Checklist
Traveling and exploring are two of my favorite hobbies. One thing we never wanted to do — and something our doctors actually encouraged — was to reduce or limit our ability to travel because of food allergies.
That doesn’t mean it was easy.
It’s hard not to worry about everything, from airport snacks to the hotel mints left on the pillow. Over the years, and after a few missteps (including last-minute pharmacy runs for antihistamines), I created a simple pre-trip checklist that helps us remember everything we need to eat safe and live well while traveling.
Why a Pre-Trip Checklist Matters
- Travel adds extra layers of risk for people with food allergies
- Preparation is the difference between peace of mind and last-minute panic
My Food Allergy Pre-Trip Checklist
1. Medical Prep
✅ Refill prescriptions (EpiPens, antihistamines, inhalers)
✅ Pack extra medication in carry-on bags (never checked luggage)
✅ Print or save emergency action plans
2. Food & Snacks
✅ Pack safe, non-perishable snacks (bars, crackers, fruit packs)
✅ Research grocery stores near your destination
✅ Bring allergy-safe basics in case options are limited
3. Documentation
✅ Carry a doctor’s note for medications (especially for air travel)
✅ Pack allergy ID cards or medical bracelets
✅ Translate allergy cards if traveling internationally
4. Travel Logistics
✅ Contact airlines and hotels in advance to note allergies
✅ Research local restaurants and review menus ahead of time
✅ Save emergency hospital or clinic information for your destination
5. Kitchen & Dining Prep
✅ If staying in a rental, ask about cookware and bring your own if needed
✅ Wipe down airplane tray tables, rental kitchens, and shared surfaces
✅ Pack small travel utensils and sanitizing wipes
Traveling with food allergies does require extra planning, but adding a checklist like this to your routine can make trips run smoother and far less stressful.
A little preparation goes a long way toward helping you eat safe and live well — wherever your travels take you!
